Now I'm not normally one for romantic comedies and not because I think 'they are for girls'. There is so much wrong with them and they tell women all the wrong stuff and give all the wrong messages. They teach that all women, regardless of how successful they are, are nothing without a man to tell them what to do. They tend to say that if you're unique that you must change to fit in or you're weird and deserve to be lonely. They show that, if you are a woman, it's alright to cheat on or leave your partner no matter how close you are to getting married and that she must always be forgiven for it if she returns yet for a man it's the worst most unforgivable thing you could do. They show that being a bitch or violent criminal is an appropriate response to a minor argument and women should always be let off with vandalism and assault if she's 'pissed at her man'. They always represent homosexual men and women, non-white Americans and all foreigners as quite racist or homophobic stereotypes and all old people as crazy or offensive. The Proposal doesn't feel the same for the most part tough it does still have the whole woman needs man to survive and racist stereotype in Ramone who could be South American or European, it doesn't elaborate he's just 'foreign' as well as an old lady being 'quirky'. It also follows the basic structure of a romantic comedy; guy and girl are indifferent/ hate each other/ they get into trouble together/ start to fall in love/ they fall out/ one runs off because they think the other doesn't love them back/ the other chases (technically stalking) the other one down/ they declare their love for one another in front of a crowd of nosy bastards.
I do love Sandra Bullock though, have done since I noticed women made me feel nice. She's an incredible actress, very funny and not afraid to do more physical comedy. She's also not afraid to get naked and why would she? Her body is flawless and at 50 she still looks better today than half of the 20 year olds do.
Malin Ã…kerman also has a smallish role in this movie, this woman could play an angel her face is always that sweet and innocent looking.
If you have a girly girlfriend and want to treat her to watching a chick flick this one is easy to sit through and thanks to the brilliant Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds there's lots of genuine laughs in this movie.
